While there were, evidently, questions raised concerning the origins of the Old Testament books, many people looked to the church for their interpretation and for guidance in their understanding of these issues. It was not until after the Reformation, however, that the level of attack against the fidelity of the Old Testament was raised. While the church has, from its earliest days, recognized that the Old Testament is a part of her heritage, there has by no means been a consensus view with regard to its interpretation. For Servetus, Iehouah was the only true God. He also knew that according to Paulus de Heredia, a Christian Cabbalist, the meaning of God's name was “He causes to be” (yehauueh), but he never confused the pronunciation of God's name with its Kabbalistic meaning (yehaweh).

For example he explained that God's name was Iehouah because in Hebrew this name was close to the name of Iesuah (Jesus), or Iehosuah, which means “Iehouah is salvation”.
